What is interesting about Geoffrey of Monmouth and Mordred is that, just before Arthur fights him, Geoffrey mentions the 'ancient book in the British tongue' again. Now, no one really believes there was one, and anything 'British' he had would be oral, but it has been noted that this is only the second time he mentions it, and his prose change somewhat at this point, with his usual detail going out of the Oxford stain glassed window. So, he could have been using either a Welsh or Cornish tradition, the results of which meant had to create the reasons for this. But ancient and local traditions do not mean the truth, of course; and 'ancient' could go back back no further than the 9th century.
