Author’s Inspiration ~ The Draig’s Woman by Lisa Dawn Wadler #HistoricalFiction #Scotland #timetravel @lisadawnwadler

The Draig’s Woman
 by Lisa Dawn Wadler

Rescuing the man tied to a tree seemed like a rational decision. Claire is a smart, capable bookkeeper who happens to work at a martial arts academy. She has no idea the door she walked through to save the bound man would leave her trapped in 13th century Scotland. She is unable to regret the night of passion shared with Ian, even though it happened with the threat of death just outside the door. She pretends to be content with Ian’s friendship, knowing his people must come first. Compelled by honor and tormented by desire, is being his woman, while he marries another, enough?

Ian, Laird of the Draig Clan, is a man trapped by fate. Forced by necessity to marry a woman he has never met, her dowry is essential to save his clan. However, he is in love with the woman who saved his life and then spent one night in his arms. Duty prevents Ian from being able to marry Claire as custom, honor, and his heart demand. Drawn to her, believing they share the same desires and dreams in life, he finally offers her the only option available, a place by his side and in his bed.

Claire and Ian are bound together in love and then ripped apart by deception and a plot to destroy the Draig clan. Facing the final battle alone and unarmed, Claire saves them all. The ultimate challenge is forgiving Ian for sending her away.

My Inspiration

My inspiration is a collision of multiple events. Roughly seven years ago I began taking martial arts classes with my kids. Initially to make them happy, but I stayed for the personal accomplishment. About a year into martial arts, I worked with an instructor – a fourth degreed black belt complete with a shaved head and loads of tattoos – he was teaching me to escape a hold and then flip the opponent onto the floor. When I finally managed to execute the move correctly, I reached down to help him up from the mat and he called me a bad ass. Seriously? Me a bad ass? I’m a middle-aged mom…. That singular comment made with a wry grin filled an empty place I never knew existed.

When I next picked up my latest historical romance, the heroine found herself in a precarious situation and was being held virtually the same way I had been in class. In my head, I saw her escape and eliminate the threat, but she didn’t. She fretted and endured the psychological torment until the hero came to save, just in the nick of time. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Unable to find the type of heroine I wanted, I sat down to write her. Writing a book, much less a series, had never been a goal. But then neither had earning a black belt. Life changes our plans and creates new ambitions.

As a huge fan of time travel romance, this seemed like the optimal method to place my martial arts heroines in a setting where their skills wouldn’t be expected. To shake up the genre a bit, my heroines are the true heroes of the tales. The save the proverbial day, the clan and the Laird. Don’t worry, each meets their other half and a happily-ever-after is guaranteed.

Since I began this series, the world has changed. The #metoo revolution began. Women have begun standing up and not tolerating the same misogynistic behavior. It’s about time. We’ve a long way to go, but it’s start. Perhaps my heroines are timely. They don’t tolerate and certainly stand up for themselves.

To blend fiction into reality, we have to be strong. Yes, take your daughters to dance and art class. Enjoy each and every moment. Also teach them to take care of themselves. Enroll them in self-defense classes, enroll yourself too! Take it one step further and try martial arts. Learn to defend. Enroll your sons and listen when they are taught important concepts like respect. As a parent, that singular word, respect, is a fantastic launching pad for necessary lessons.

Time of the Draig – The true beginning to the Draig Series. This one explains the source of the time travel mechanism used in each book. No magic or mysterious fogs, the door that leads to medieval Scotland in each of The Draig books comes from a science fiction foundation.

The Draig’s Wife Emma leaps into the doorway and becomes trapped in 15th century Scotland. Laird Declan must marry or forfeit his lands and title. Emma has to decide if she is willing to be his to save those she loves or is risking her heart too great a price. What does a modern woman know about marrying a laird to save a clan?

The Draig’s Choice – to be released Fall 2018.

Lisa Dawn Wadler

Lisa began writing after reading yet another romance novel where the heroine needed a man to rescue her from physical harm. While a firm believer in the strong alpha-male hero in any story, she wondered what would happen if that hero met a woman who was able to take care of herself physically. Using her several years of Tae Kwon Do training and mixing in time travel, her multi-award winning debut novel, The Draig’s Woman was born.

Lisa lives in the Chicago suburbs and is married to her high school sweetheart. They have two children and one very spoiled dog. And yes, she finally earned her black belt 3/17.
