AD 454. Three years after the Roman victory over Attila the Hun at Catalaunum, Arria Felix and Garic the Frank are married and enjoying life on Garic’s farm in northern Gaul (France). Their happy life is interrupted when a cryptic message arrives from Arria’s father, the esteemed Senator Felix, calling them to Rome. At Arria’s insistence, but against Garic’s better judgment, they leave at once.

On their arrival at Villa Solis, they are confronted with a brutal murder and a dangerous mission. The fate of a profound and sacred object—Christ’s Crown of Thorns—rests in their hands. They must carry the holy relic to the safety of Constantinople, away from a corrupt emperor and old enemies determined to steal it for their own gain. But a greater force arises against them—a secret cult who will commit any atrocity to capture the Crown. All the while, the gruesome murder and the conspiracy behind it haunt Arria’s thoughts.

Arria and Garic’s marital bonds are tested but forged as they partner together to fulfill one of history’s most challenging missions, The Quest for the Crown of Thorns.

Praise

"In this thriller, set in fifth-century Rome, rivals race to possess Christ's crown of thorns. Ripley Miller (On the Edge of Sunrise 2015) astutely brings to life a Rome teetering precariously on the brink of collapse ... The plot advances energetically, and the combination of political and romantic drama--spiritual as well--is rousing. The reader should be glad to have read this volume and eager for a third. Intelligent and artfully crafted historical fiction ...

Kirkus Review

"From cover to cover a gripping read - in all senses of the word! Grips your interest and imagination, your held breath and your pounding heart! A thumping good novel!"

Helen Hollick USA Today bestselling author of the Sea Witch Voyages

"The Quest for the Crown of Thorns is an elegant masterpiece of historical fiction. This book totally ensnared me in its clasps, and it did not release me until I had read it all. The attention to detail was exquisite. The characterisation was sublime, and the romance was breathtakingly beautiful. I adored the world that Miller has created, as well as the characters in it. This is a sit-down and finish book and is one I would Highly Recommend."

The Usurper King
By Mercedes Rochelle

Author: Mercedes Rochelle
Narrated By: Kevin E. Green
Format: Digital Audio
Run Time: 10 hours 23 minutes

From Outlaw to Usurper, Henry Bolingbroke fought one rebellion after another.

First, he led his own uprising. Then he captured a forsaken king. Henry had no intention of taking the crown for himself; it was given to him by popular acclaim. Alas, it didn’t take long to realize that that having the kingship was much less rewarding than striving for it. Only three months after his coronation, Henry IV had to face a rebellion led by Richard’s disgruntled favorites. Repressive measures led to more discontent. His own supporters turned against him, demanding more than he could give. The haughty Percies precipitated the Battle of Shrewsbury which nearly cost him the throne—and his life.

To make matters worse, even after Richard II’s funeral, the deposed monarch was rumored to be in Scotland, planning his return. The king just wouldn’t stay down and malcontents wanted him back.

Books have been an important part of my life as long as I can remember, and at 54 years old, that’s a lot of books. My earliest memories of reading are CS Lewis’, “The Horse and His Boy” – by far the best of the Narnia books, the Adventures series by Willard Price, and “Goalkeepers are Different” by sports journalist Brian Glanville. An eclectic mix. My first English teacher was surprised to hear that I was reading, Le Carré, Ken Follett, Nevil Shute and “All the Presidents’ Men” by Woodward and Bernstein at the age of 12. I was simply picking up the books my father had finished.

School syllabus threw up the usual suspects – Shakespeare, Chaucer, Dickens, Hardy, “To Kill a Mockingbird” – which I have reread often, and others I don’t immediately recall. By “A” level study, my then English teachers were pulling their hair out at my “perverse waste of talent” – I still have the report card! But I did manage a pass.

During a 35 year career, briefly in Banking and then in IT, I managed to find time, with unfailing family support, to study another lifelong passion, graduating with an Open University Bachelors’ degree in History in 2002. This fascination with all things historical inspired me to begin the Time Stones series. There is so much to our human past, and so many differing views on what is the greatest, and often the saddest, most tragic story. I decided I wanted to write about it; to shine a small light on those, sometimes pivotal stories, which are less frequently mentioned.

In 1995, my wife, Michelle, and I moved from England to southern Germany, where we still live, with our two children, one cat, and, when she pays us a visit, one chocolate labrador. I have been fortunate that I could satisfy another wish, to travel as widely as possible and see as much of our world as I can. Destinations usually include places of historic and archaeological interest, mixed with a large helping of sun, sea and sand for my wife’s peace of mind.

Book Review - Amok the Powerful by Alan Draven

Amok the Powerful
By Alan Draven

Publication Date: 26th November 2024
Publisher: Pixie Dust Press
Page Length: 320 Pages
Genre: Fantasy / Sword & Sorcery

From the Author of BITTERNEST and NOCTURNAL OFFERINGS Comes a Collection of Eight Connected Sword & Sorcery Tales

Armed with his powerful sword, a young barbarian named Amok and his friend Goyiir the sorceress embark on a quest to seek answers about his murky past. As they head west toward the mythical province of Atlantia, the road is long and fraught with peril.

They’ll battle a wide variety of foes ranging from ninjas, spectres, and even aliens as they carve their way through the cycle of seasons. Before their journey comes to an end, Amok will have to conquer Atlantia's evil ruler, the Harbinger of Doom, and his cultists.

Amok has always been curious about his past, and the many unanswered questions drive him to uncover the truth about his early years. A recurring dream has led him to believe that the answers he seeks lie in the west, so he plans to embark on a journey in search of them.

Accompanied by his sorceress friend, Goyiir, Amok dons his powerful sword and mounts his trusty stallion, Melrik. They set off toward the west, knowing the road ahead is perilous. As they navigate their way forward, fragments of the story begin to unfold, revealing a crucial truth: they are journeying to Atlantia. To put an end to the evil they face along the way, they must confront Atlantia’s king, the Harbinger of Doom.

Amok the Powerful by Alan Draven, is a collection of eight stories, following Amok and Goyiir on their journey west.

Amok is a character who remains unfazed by any challenge he encounters. He is fearless when facing monsters or people, confident in his own strength and in the magical properties of his sword, which holds mysterious powers. He greatly values his friendship with Goyiir, and together, they appear almost invincible. Amok is a character you can quickly come to like because of his can-do attitude; he is always willing to help those he meets along his journey. His tendency to jump into battles, even when they aren’t his to fight, is admirable, although it sometimes lands him in tricky situations due to his lack of foresight. The adventures he embarks on are filled with both mystery and action, and the intricate storytelling leads to some engaging quests.

Amok has many questions about his childhood. He doesn’t remember anything from the first seven years of his life, as he was found on a doorstep as a baby, with nothing but his sword strapped to his back. He also has questions about his life in the modern world, as there are aspects he doesn’t fully understand. The sword, which has been with him since infancy, feels like an extension of himself when he fights, and it glows purple whenever danger approaches. The significance of the sword puzzles Amok. Why does it seem perfectly suited to him, and what magical properties might it possess?

Additionally, there is a large white bear that appears during his quests. He has faced this bear multiple times, and he is curious about the reason it follows him. Throughout his adventures, Amok gradually uncovers more about these mysteries, slowly revealing the larger world and enriching the story. The quest to discover the truth behind all of Amok’s questions drives the novel forward, compelling readers to seek the answers just as fervently as Amok does.

This novel is crafted in a unique way. Although it tells one overarching story of Amok and Goyiir as they journey to Atlantia, it is divided into eight smaller tales. Each of these tales details a side quest that the two characters encounter along their journey. This structure not only breaks up the narrative but also ties it all together. The journey is long, so focusing on the moments when Amok and Goyiir face challenges and solve mysteries keeps the story fast-paced and intriguing. Much like a bard recounting the legendary feats of Amok the Powerful, the author has successfully created eight captivating stories that make you eager to continue reading and learn more about this great warrior.

The language used throughout this novel suggests it is aimed at a younger audience, as the descriptions are often simple and leave much to the imagination. The narrative is predominantly driven by dialogue rather than descriptive passages, which can make the stories feel more akin to those written for young teens. However, the content does not align with this assumption. There are several explicit sexual scenes that are inappropriate for younger readers, and the violence depicted is quite graphic.

At the end of each of the eight stories, there are illustrations showing what the characters look like, which further reinforces the idea that the book may be better suited for younger readers if it weren't for the inappropriate content. Nevertheless, as an easy-to-read novel, it is very engaging and keeps the reader captivated. If you're looking for an exciting fantasy action and adventure story without overly intricate descriptions, this book is certainly worth considering.

Amok the Powerful by Alan Draven is an exciting adventure that features eight fast-paced and engaging stories. With mysteries to solve and battles to fight, the journey is filled with friendships and rivalries. Amok's expedition is a memorable experience that lingers long after you've finished reading.

The Absolution of Mars by T F Troy

The Absolution of Mars
By T F Troy

Publication Date: 21st January 2025
Publisher: Historium Press
Page Length: 327 Pages
Genre: Historical Fiction / Historical Thriller

Politics, Friendship, or Greed? Which of these was the true author of the Confederate conspiracy to decapitate the Union?

The Absolution of Mars by T.F. Troy is a masterful blend of historical fiction, human drama and moral exploration. Set against the backdrop of a racially fraught period in American history, the story does not back away from the harsh realities or racial biases of the day.

The narrative introduces Jemm Pender, a former slave with a superior intellect, who rises to become a key agent in the National Detective Police Force. Jemm is tasked to trace the movements of J. W. Boyd, a Confederate spy working out of Canada.

From its intriguing opening scene, where playful dialogue among children hints at deeper mysteries, the story captivates with a blend of vivid detail and emotional depth. Jemm's quest intertwines with his wife Marnie and Aunt Cordelia, both blessed with remarkable capabilities that are being lost to the scientific thought of the day.

Troy tackles difficult topics with honesty and precision, creating moments that are as painful as they are profound. The prose is rich and evocative, with dialogue that breathes life into the characters and their struggles. The Absolution of Mars is a poignant, thought-provoking exploration of history, identity, and humanity, recommended for readers seeking depth and nuance.
