Marguerite: Queen of England

From the moment Henry VI's new queen, Marguerite of Anjou, sets foot on English soil she is despised by the English as a foreigner, and blamed for the failures of the hundred years war in France.

Her enemies impede her role as the king’s consort and when Henry sinks into apparent madness her bid to become regent is rejected. Marguerite must fight, not only for her own position but to maintain Henry’s possession of the crown.

The ambitious Duke, Richard of York seizes control of the country, thrusting Marguerite aside and inflating the mutual hatred between the houses of York and Lancaster. But the queen refuses to relinquish power and fights determinedly for the rights of her son, Edward of Lancaster.

The long and bitter civil conflict, that has come to be known as the war of the roses, commences.

Publisher: Historium Books
Page Length: 723 Pages
Genre: Literary Historical Fiction

The Dream Collector immerses the reader into the exciting milieu of late 19th Century Paris when art and medicine were in the throes of revolution, art turning to Impressionism, medicine turning to psychology. In 1885, Julie Forette, a self-educated woman from Marseilles, finds employment at the infamous Salpêtrière, hospital and asylum to over five thousand disabled, demented and abandoned women, a walled city ruled by the famed neurologist and arrogant director, Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot.

Julie Forette forms a friendship with the young, visiting intern Sigmund Freud who introduces her to the altering-conscious power of cocaine. Together they pursue the hidden potential of hypnotism and dream interpretation. After Freud receives the baffling case of the star hysteric, Sabrine Weiss, he is encouraged by Julie to experiment with different modes of treatment, including “talking sessions.” Their urgent quest is to find a cure for Sabrine, Princess of the Hysterics, before Dr. Charcot resorts to the radical removal of her ovaries.

In Paris, Julie finds a passion for the new art emerging, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and forms friendships with the major artists of the period, including Pissarro, Monet, and Degas. Julie becomes intimately involved with the reclusive Cezanne only to be seduced by the “Peruvian Savage” Paul Gauguin.  Julie is the eponymous ‘Dream Collector’ collecting the one unforgettable, soul-defining dream of the major historical figures of the period.

Nathanial Attempting To Smuggle Fleeing Slaves Onto A Ship Sailing North

At last, the wagon pulled even to the three guards. One moved toward Roscoe, while the others moved to examine the goods and human cargo in the back.

The lead guard received the driver’s paperwork. “Roscoe, you back again? Which ship are you working with today?”

“Pegasus, Whit. How are you? I got some passengers heading to the Flying Cloud, and they’re late. I’m going to take them there first. Do you know where the Cloud’s tied up?”

“Straight ahead. I need the papers for your passengers.”

Nat smiled, slipping the glasses lower on his nose to take in the guard. “I have them right here, sir. Mister Nestor is correct. We’re late. I’d appreciate whatever you could do to expedite this process.”

The guard seized the documents after moving around the wagon to stand close to Nat. “I have a job to do, mister. Next time, get here earlier. Cummings, eh? Where are you headed, and why do you have these slaves with you?”

“Please let me explain.” Nat gingerly stepped down, trying to gauge where the ground was through the thick spectacles. His injured foot buckled. The guard grabbed Nat to keep him from falling, their faces inches apart. Nat pulled himself up and back. “Please excuse my clumsiness.” In a soft voice, “I’m selling the two children in Newport, but the parents don’t know. They’re my house slaves. I don’t want to get them upset. If you could say nothing to them, that would help me manage this delicate situation.”

The guard returned his gaze to the paperwork. “Funny you’re heading north to sell them. Newport isn’t the big slaving market it used to be. Why aren’t you using a market here?”

“That’s where the buyer wants to take possession before he returns south. He promised to pay an excellent price for the two. Since I have business up north, I didn’t ask questions.”

Whit looked up from the papers, eyes narrowing to study Nat. “Let me see your papers for passage.”

Dry-mouthed, Nat froze. Neither Paul nor Moses mentioned the need for additional documentation. The guard’s burning eyes seemed to scan every facet of Nat’s face. Pushing his glasses farther up his nose, “The captain has them. I’m supposed to meet him at the ship.”

Nat stepped to the side to move a little further from the guard. Again, his foot gave way. Grimacing, he grabbed at his ankle.

“Careful there, Mister Cummings,” the guard said. “You look like you’re seriously hurt. Let’s get you in the guardhouse to have a better look at that foot. Roscoe, pull ahead off to the side.”

Back leaning against the wagon, Nat smiled to hide his discomfort. “No, I’m fine. I don’t want to miss my ship. I’ll take care of my foot on board.”

Roscoe interrupted, “Whit, you got a real backup of wagons today. Mister Cummings is good people and needs help with his foot. If the captain doesn’t have the right papers, none of these people will be leaving. Let me get him over there. I’ll bring them back if there’s no passage booked.”

The guard lifted his head to take in the growing line of wagons and upset drivers. “Alright, but if Cummings doesn’t have passage, bring them back here.”

“Will do. Get back up here, Mister Cummings. We’ve got to get you to your boat.”

With the paperwork clutched in his perspiring hand, Nat crawled back up to his seat. The minute Nat settled, Roscoe snapped the reins. The wagon lurched forward. Away from the guards, he leaned towards Nat and said, “I think I know what you’re up to, Mister Cummings—if that’s your real name. You’re in a heap of trouble if that captain doesn’t take you on board.”

Mike Weedall

As the author of three books, Mike’s passion is finding the little-known stories of history and bringing them to life. History in school is too often events and dates. Mike seeks to discover the people who lived those events and reveal why those individuals made the decisions they did. Ultimately, there are stories to be mined, and who doesn’t love a good story?

In his soon-to-be-released historical novel “Escape To The Maroons,” Mike tells the little-known story of 1791 self-liberated slaves who chose to struggle for survival in The Great Dismal Swamp in their determination to live free. The term Maroons delineates areas where escaped slaves fled and could not be recaptured. It’s estimated that over 2,000 survived deep in the swamp around the turn of that century.

His first book “Iva: The True Story of Tokyo Rose” describes the tragic life of Iva Toguri. Trapped in Japan during World War II, this Japanese American woman was forced to work for Radio Tokyo. Although she never participated in propaganda, the racial animus of post-war America led to her being falsely labelled as Tokyo Rose and prosecuted for treason. Through her incarceration and the ongoing discrimination heaped upon her, Iva never lost her courage and determination.

“War Angel: Korea 1950” was his second book that followed a reservist nurse thrust into the carnage of The Korean War. Serving as an operating room nurse in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, the real MASH and strength of a woman is revealed.

Mike resides with his family in the Pacific Northwest where they enjoy experiencing the outdoors.
