35 years of Robin
of Sherwood

I
was all of 6 years old when Robin of Sherwood first aired on British
Television. I can remember sitting down with my siblings on a sleepy Saturday
evening to watch the show on a small portable television which had a somewhat
temperamental aerial.
The
opening credits rolled with what was to become one of the most memorable
anthems of my childhood.
Robin
of Sherwood Trailer - ITV Series 1984
I
was lucky to live (and still do) very close to some of the locations where Robin of Sherwood
was filmed and probably best of all for a starry-eyed child my mum worked as a
secretary for John Abineri (Hern the Hunter) for a while.
I was even lucky enough to meet the cast at a charity football match.
Here is a picture of a very excited me waiting to get Jason Connery's autograph! |
There is no doubt that Robin of Sherwood influenced my life and it was certainly a huge part of my childhood, and my children have also throughly enjoyed the series.
So, here we are thirty-five
years later and I think it is safe to say that Robin of Sherwood has stood the
test of time. There is something almost timeless about the series and it still
appeals to a very wide audience.
Which
brings me to the purpose of this blog post. Myths, Legends, Books & Coffee Pots... is
celebrating all things Robin of Sherwood this April, so come with me and meet some of the
actors from the series and some of those who were directly and indirectly involved with Robin of Sherwood.

It has to be said I was a wee bit older when this was first shown - old enough to rush out and buy the soundtrack album (on vinyl of course - what else was there?) as soon as I could. I guess it helped that I'd been smitten by Clannad a couple of years before when they provided the haunting theme for Belfast drama 'Harry's Game', starring Ray Lonnen, a favourite actor from another fave series 'Sandbaggers' (I could go on with this TV-favourite-head-tennis for ages!) Looking forward to reminiscing my way through your posts Mary Anne!
ReplyDeleteI hope you will post links on the official fan club, Spirit of Sherwood, page on Facebook! Nothing’s forgotten!
ReplyDeleteI love Robin Of Sherwood. Inspiring that both legends of Robin are used ie peasant and rich Robin. Memorable characters and you can tell the actors have bonded. I have the DVD boxset but plan to upgrade to Blu Ray.
ReplyDeleteI just played the video you posted, and it brought back such wonderful memories. I loved this show. Happy anniversary.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all time favorite series. I was heartbroken when it came to an end.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the wonderful post!
